Here is a project I've been working on for six or eight months. It may look similar to [link] and for good reason. The same 100 unique colored paper pack was used as well as the same fold and same side frame. The first difference is number of units. With Gradient Garden I tried to gradate the colors as best I could but only used 88 of the 100 colors for a 8 * 11 unit rectangle. For this guy I used 98 sheets from the pack and 2 sheets from another as two of the sheets were foil paper and I didn't need to shiny to stand out. On top of that I quartered each sheet to have a total of 400 sheets. That ends up making a 16 * 25 unit rectangle. Having 4 sheets of each color I made each color into a tetromino. So there are a total of 100 tetrominos on here. To top it off, there are 5 basic shapes, L, I, T, S, and O. 100 divided by 5 = 20 units of each shape. Besides one little mishap, the bricks fell into place (pun intended) nicely. I thought it'd be a nightmare to fit them all together.

Coupled with the idea I wanted this to be as random and chaotic as possible, with Gradient Garden I was trying to be as orderly as possible, this is the result. I had the shapes drawn out in my notebook, randomly placing the shapes as needed, and shuffled the colors as much as possible intentionally moving non-complimentary colors together and moving similar ones apart.

Now that it's done... I don't know what to think of it and I don't know if I like it even though it has turned out exactly as planned. Yes, it's pretty to look at and I'm sure a few of you may like it. When I stood back and stared at it after finishing I thought "How can something take so much planning and be so colorful and organized, yet be so devoid of emotion and life?" Assuming art is simply a reflection of the soul, this does not bode well for me. It's kind of a wake up call to my current stoicism obsession. All the crap that has happened to me since 2008 has taken it's toll. I forced myself to keep on moving and put on my bravest face and in doing so I was no longer sad. And I'm no longer excited about anything. I feel little in the way of accomplishment in making this with the exception of maybe nailing my feelings of compressed chaos.

Update April 1st 2012: I ended this on a rather depressing note but instead of changing my comments I'm supplementing the end with a more positive journal entry here: [link]

So many pieces. It definitely is quite the opposite of Gradient Garden. Great to read up on your positive journal entry as well!

Yup, 20 of each shape. I actually had to draw out 5 separate grids to double check I had the correct number of each. I screwed by adding an extra L and leaving out an S but killed one L brick, moved one T brick, then added the S. Rather smooth, I thought.
And I am feeling more upbeat in general still. I need to sit and reply to your note and fill you in.

Yeah. Oh nice, nothing like rearranging tetris blocks to fit the right shape. Kinda reminds me of playing with Pentominos. No worries on replying on the note. I never know what to talk about anyways O: Other than video games.

Awesome work! It makes me want to go play the game now.

As for you're current conundrum, art is a subject expression of the soul. You may see a lifeless emotional void but to me this is a warm reminder of warm moments with my father playing Tetris. To me, this is about bonding, fun, and the feeling of triumph in solving a puzzle. We ourselves are also subjective. Sometimes it takes another person's view for us to see things in our selves that we are blind to. As much as this is compressed chaos, it is also categorized order. In my opinion careful colour organization, an even number of each shape, and an even number of units which is easily divisible by multiple numbers all point more to careful planning and control than any kind of chaos.

You may not feel any sense of accomplishment with the act of creation for this piece but maybe that satisfaction can't be found in the act, rather reactions of the observer? Personally, I feel no joy in anything I make for myself and as a result have only finished one thing. For me the joy in my work comes from it's effect on others.

I am a big fan of Tetris. It was first introduced to me when I was 7-8 by my uncle and I still love it now. Though now that I think about it, I think I really like simple geometric shapes and bright colours because I love Rubik's cubes too. Looking around my apartment, I have a Rubik's cushions, clock, coasters (in my car I have Rubik's dice hanging off my mirror) and I have Tetris Link, a Tetris block thing.. My best score on Tetris DS is 6million something something.

In anycase, what I'm trying to say is, I like this =P It's awesome that you got them all to fit perfectly. I think if I tried to do something like this I'd overthink it and end up with extra pieces. I think all the different colours makes it interesting to look at. Because then there's all the different shapes and forms to see in it.
